Literature club posters. SUPER-CURRICULAR.
I made this poster to advertise me and Amelie’s literature club in school. I used yellow and purple since they are both vivid & eye catching and relatively mellow & warm colours, especially against the off-white/cream background which has connotations of a page in a book. The golden yellow connotes success and brightness, while the purple points to royalty, and thus likely academia, history and prestige, as these things are historically, wrongfully or rightfully, associated with the upper class. A generic image of books is front and centre, quickly informing the passing student what the club is about and hopefully catching the attention of any avid readers. I also made sure that all necessary information was easily accessible on the sheet, with only more specific details in small print.
SHSG Sixth Form advertisements.
I made these posters using the photos taken by me, Ollie, and Heidi, to advertise the school. My unique selling points were that we are an Ofsted outstanding grammar school, with a good ethos, that values and sets students up for successful futures. I also used community and how hard our students work. All of the posts are in a social media accessible format (specifically instagram), but the first two posts are targeted towards y11 students who may be scrolling through instagram, because they may value a schools environment and community more then parents who care about success and making sure their children are generally looked after, the second one is more eye catching and could entice high achievers who want to learn in a fun environment. With the last poster, it is aimed more towards parents, it is more informative and detailed, compared to the other two which may catch someone scrollings eyes and excite a teenager. I made sure to include the details of the open evening in two of the posters so whoever sees it can easily access the actual school. Additionally, I used the schools green and gold motif, to create a brand image, but also because green is the colour of nature, relaxation, and also progress (ie a green light in traffic), whereas gold is the colour of success and riches. I also made sure to utilise the schools logo, not only to show school pride and identity, but because it is a very traditional logo, which implies the school has been around for a long time, making it trustworthy, historical, and more traditionally academic, which may make parents and carers feel more comfortable with the school. We had a few photos of features of the school, like our nature, and scholars, etc, but I felt inclined to take a more student-first approach, because student satisfaction and success is key, and I find it is more emotive and engaging for the audience to see themselves or their possible futures reflected in an advertisement, it makes it feel more real.
In terms of Stuart Hall’s representation theory, I have representation of multiple genders and ethnic groups, so everyone can feel suited for our school, furthermore, each group is represented as positive, intelligent and studious. For reception theory, the preferred reading would be that SHSG is a very academic and exciting school, however, some may oppositionally read it as stuck up or elitist.
